Stingrays are flat, mysterious sea creatures that glide effortlessly through the water like underwater birds. Found in oceans all over the world, stingrays usually stick close to the sandy sea floor, where they blend in perfectly and wait to surprise their prey—like crabs, clams, and small fish.
With their pancake-like bodies and long, whip-like tails, stingrays move by flapping their wing-like fins. Many species have venomous barbs on their tails, which they use only in self-defense. Despite their name, most stingrays are gentle and peaceful.
