Newts are small, aquatic amphibians that belong to the salamander family. These fascinating creatures can be found in cool, damp environments like ponds, lakes, and marshes. Newts have smooth, slimy skin and vibrant colors, which help them blend into their surroundings or warn predators that they’re not a tasty meal.
Like other amphibians, newts start life as tadpoles before going through an amazing transformation called metamorphosis. Many newts live in water during their juvenile stages and then venture onto land as adults—but some never leave the water!
