If you’ve ever seen a laid-back lizard basking in the sun with a prehistoric look, chances are you’ve spotted an iguana! These scaly reptiles are native to Central and South America and the Caribbean, and they’re known for their chill vibes, long tails, and spiky crests. Iguanas might look like little dinosaurs, but they’re herbivores that prefer munching on leafy greens, fruits, and flowers.

With their strong claws and excellent climbing skills, iguanas spend a lot of time up in trees. They love soaking up the sun to regulate their body temperature—and they’re great swimmers too!

Fun Fact

Iguanas have a “third eye” on top of their heads! It’s called a parietal eye, and while it doesn’t see images like regular eyes, it can detect changes in light and movement—helping them sense predators from above.
