Axolotls are adorable, aquatic creatures that look like they’ve just stepped out of a fantasy world! Native to lakes in Mexico, these fascinating amphibians are often called “Mexican walking fish” because of their ability to swim and walk along the lake floor with their tiny legs. However, axolotls aren’t fish—they’re neotenic, which means they keep their juvenile features (like their gills) throughout their entire lives!
Unlike other amphibians that undergo metamorphosis and live on land, axolotls stay in the water their whole lives. They’re famous for their ability to regrow lost limbs, eyes, and even parts of their heart and brain.
